The Virtual Reality Podcast

May 10, 2018

When Alex Chaucer (former host of the #VReduchat and an previous panelist on #CPDinVR) put out a poll on Twitter about starting a new VR themed venture, the idea to start a podcast received 100% of the votes. It was actually the option I voted for myself since there wasn't really anything out there in the podcast space for VR in education.

In March the announcement came that The VR Podcast was indeed coming to fruition but Alex wasn't alone. In fact he had assembled a bit of a superteam of thought leaders within the AR/VR education field. The shows hosting lineup consisted of:

Alex Chaucer - @geoparadigm

Alex has been working in education, research, and training for the last 10 years, and more recently specifically focusing on augmented and virtual reality. He has worked under a NASA grant teaching and developing college level courses, has developed a high school program, has developed and taught online coursework, and has been an instructional designer.

Steven Sato - @stevensato

Another former #CPDinVR panelist, Steven is the Technology Director for a K8 Independent School in Los Angeles with 19 years experience in education. He is a Google Certified Innovator, the Co-Organizer of the LA Immersive Edtech Meetup Group and is an Immersive Experience Producer who harnesses AR and VR to redefine learning opportunities.

Amanda Fox@amandafoxstem

Amanda is an educational pioneer, edupreneur, and CEO of FoxBrite, LLC. She was the recipient of the 2016 ISTE Emerging Leader Award, and was recently recognized as a PBS Digital innovator for her initiatives in leveraging  technology to enhance student learning . She is also the president of the Young Educator Network.

James McCrary @jamesmccrary

James is a director of technology & consultant based in Baton Rouge. He leads PD at the local, state, national level & started #PDexchangeEDU, a virtual professional development model.  He is a Google Certified Educator, Common Sense Media Certified teacher, an Apple Teacher and an Alpha Squirrel Class of 2016.

Now that's an impressive lineup right there! To be honest I was a little skeptical of the four host idea at first since I listen to a lot of podcasts and have always preferred the dynamic of a two-man (or woman) team. It really does work here though, with different members of the team taking the lead at different times and a genuinely natural camaraderie giving the quartet a great dynamic.

Episode 1 launched in the first week of April 2018 and at the time of writing, the team have released 5 episodes starting with a four-part series themed around Ready Player One. Topics have included digital safety within VR, equity of immersive technology and more. It's definitely something I recommend to everyone working in the VR/AR education space or indeed any educators looking to incorporate immersive technology in their classrooms. These four people are genuinely passionate about the subject matter and willing to give their time to share with the wider education community - it's something I can personally relate to and will support in any way I can.
